We get this question a lot: does my old band fit my new watch?
Here's the thing to understand first. Every Apple Watch series comes in two sizes, a smaller case and a bigger case, and the two are otherwise identical. Same features, same everything, just a difference in screen size. Apple's just changed the exact millimetre numbers a few times over the years, which is where the confusion comes from.
Small side: 38mm, 40mm, 41mm, 42mm (Series 10 & 11)
Large side: 42mm (Series 1-3), 44mm, 45mm, 46mm

What Actually Decides If a Band Fits
It really comes down to one small part: the connector, the piece that locks the band into the watch case. That's the only thing that changes between small and large sizes. Everything else about the band, the material, the length, the clasp, stays the same.
Which means if your band is the wrong size, you don't necessarily need a whole new band. On our leather and metal straps, the connector can be swapped out on its own with a size and connector replacement kit, so a band you already love can move to a different size case.
Silicone and nylon bands are the exception. Their connector is moulded in as one solid piece, so it can't be swapped, if the size is wrong on those, you'll need a new band.
The Two Band Families
Bands follow the same small/large split as the case. A band made for one small size fits any other small size, and same for large. Step outside your family and the connector simply won't lock in.
Small family: 38mm, 40mm, 41mm, 42mm (Series 10 & 11)
Large family: 42mm (Series 1-3), 44mm, 45mm, 46mm, 49mm

The 42mm Trap
This is the one thing worth watching out for, and it's the top thing we get emails about.
There are two different 42mm Apple Watches. The old Series 1-3 42mm was the large size. The new Series 10 and 11 42mm is the small size. So if you're upgrading from a Series 3 42mm to a Series 11 42mm, your old bands won't fit as-is, though if it's leather or metal, the connector kit can convert it.
Case Size Isn't Wrist Size
Case size decides which band family fits. Wrist size decides what length you need within that family. You can have a 42mm Series 11 with a 140mm wrist or a 190mm wrist, same band family, very different lengths. Sport bands come in S/M and M/L; link bracelets adjust by removing links.
Our bands cover wrists from 110mm right up to 220mm. If you're on the smaller end, our small wrist collection is built specifically for that range. On the larger end, most 220mm-capable bands are silicone or nylon, since metal and leather don't stretch as far comfortably.
One thing worth knowing: our product photos are all shot on the smaller case size, which is why the bands look extra delicate and refined in the pictures. If you're on a larger case, the proportions will look slightly different in person, just a touch more substantial, not less elegant.

Are all Apple Watch bands universal?
No, but close. Two families, and bands swap freely within each one. What matters is your case size in mm, not the series.
Will my old 42mm band fit a Series 11 42mm?
Not as-is. Old 42mm (Series 1-3) is the large family, Series 11 42mm is the small family. If it's leather or metal, you can convert it with a connector kit instead of buying new.
Can I resize any band myself?
Leather and metal, yes, the connector swaps out. Silicone and nylon, no, the connector is moulded in and can't be separated from the band.
Do 41mm bands fit a 42mm Series 10 or 11?
Yes, both small family.
What band family does the Apple Watch Ultra use?
The large family. The Ultra's 49mm case takes bands built for 44mm, 45mm, 46mm, and 49mm, same as the rest of the large-family lineup.
What size do I need for a Series 11?
42mm takes small-family bands. 46mm takes large-family bands.
My band won't slide in. Wrong size?
Probably. Hold the release button fully down, slide the band sideways, don't force it.
